300 dpi in practice
At 12 dots per millimetre, 300 dpi resolves detail that 203 dpi cannot: small point sizes, dense 2D codes such as Data Matrix and QR, fine rule lines, and the compliance text that regulated packaging often requires. If your labels carry a lot of information in a small area, this is the head for it.
Early signs of wear
Dropouts appear first in the finest elements. On a 300 dpi head, small text and 2D codes degrade well before large barcodes look wrong, so scan failures on Data Matrix are often the earliest warning you get.
